Il Leone di Caprera,

EDITORS COMMENTS
a 9-meter sailing schooner, embarked on an extraordinary journey across the Atlantic Ocean in October 1880. Crewed by three intrepid Italians - Vicenzo Fondacaro, Orlando Grasoni, Pietro Troccoli - they set sail from Montevideo, Uruguay, with nothing but a sextant to guide them through uncharted waters. Their vessel, a three-ton ship, was named after Fondacaro's hometown in Caprera, Italy. The audacious expedition, which took place during the 19th century, was a testament to the exploratory spirit and navigational prowess of these European sailors. With no modern navigation tools or communication devices, they relied solely on traditional methods to navigate the vast and often treacherous Atlantic Ocean. On January 9, 1881, after enduring months at sea, Il Leone di Caprera finally arrived in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. Their successful crossing was a remarkable feat for the time and a testament to the skill and determination of Fondacaro and his crew. This engraving, published in La Ilustracion Espanola y Americana in 1881, captures the essence of their adventure. The image shows Il Leone di Caprera proudly flying the Italian flag as it sails towards the horizon, with Fondacaro, the fearless captain, standing at the prow, gazing out to sea with a sextant in hand. The coloration added in 2020 brings the historic moment to life, transporting us back to a time when human courage and ingenuity conquered the sea.
