President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924) was the 28th President of the United States, serving from 1913 to 1921. Known for his idealistic foreign policy, Wilson led the country through World War I and worked tirelessly to establish the League of Nations. In this vintage photograph from The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, Wilson is seen in a thoughtful and introspective pose, likely contemplating the weighty decisions that lay before him during his time in office. Wilson was born in Staunton, Virginia, and educated at Princeton University before going on to become a professor of jurisprudence and political science at Wesleyan University and then a professor of government at Johns Hopkins University. He entered politics as a Democrat and served as the Governor of New Jersey before being elected to the presidency. During his presidency, Wilson oversaw the passage of several significant pieces of legislation, including the Federal Reserve Act, the Clayton Antitrust Act, and the 16th Amendment, which established the federal income tax. Wilson's most notable achievement, however, was his leadership during World War I. He led the country through the war effort and, in 1919, helped draft the Treaty of Versailles, which ended the war. Wilson also advocated for the creation of the League of Nations, an international organization designed to prevent future wars, but the United States ultimately did not join the League. This photograph captures a moment in time when Wilson, a man of great intellect and vision, was facing the challenges of leading the nation through a time of war and political upheaval.
