EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the Galata Tower, also known as the Tower of Christ, standing proudly against the backdrop of Constantinople's skyline during the Ottoman Empire era. Built in 1348, the tower was an expansion of the Genoese colony in the city. The conical, cylindrical structure with a cylindrical dome and a conical roof was a unique blend of Romanesque and Islamic architectural styles. The tower, located in the Karakoy district of Istanbul, served various purposes throughout its history. It was used as a watchtower, a burial ground, and even as an observation deck. The graves and tombs surrounding the tower are visible in this engraving, reflecting the Muslim beliefs of the Ottoman Empire. The Galata Tower, with its distinctive shape, has been a symbol of Istanbul's rich history and cultural diversity for centuries. The print, created by Lemaitre and Thienon for the Historia de Turquia by Jouannin and Van Gaver in 1840, offers a glimpse into the medieval past of this magnificent city. The minaret in the background further emphasizes the Islamic influence on the architectural landscape of Constantinople during the Ottoman Empire.
