EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of celebration and camaraderie among three brave airmen of the Royal Air Force (RAF) who were decorated for their heroic actions during the early years of the Second World War. The image features, from left to right, Sergeant John Hannah, Pilot Officer C. A. H. Connor, and Flight Lieutenant R. A. B. Learoyd, each wearing their distinctive uniforms adorned with the prestigious Victoria Cross (VC) and Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) insignia. Sergeant Hannah, a gunner, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry during a bombing raid over Germany on the night of 12th-13th June 1940. Despite being badly injured, he continued to fight off enemy attacks, enabling his crew to complete their mission. Pilot Officer Connor, a pilot, received his Distinguished Flying Cross for his role in a daring daylight raid on an enemy airfield on 26th May 1940. His skill and determination in leading his formation through heavy anti-aircraft fire resulted in the successful destruction of several enemy aircraft on the ground. Flight Lieutenant Learoyd, also a pilot, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during a low-level attack on an enemy convoy on 15th September 1940. Despite suffering damage to his aircraft and being pursued by enemy fighters, he pressed on to complete his mission, sinking several enemy vessels. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the heroism and bravery displayed by the airmen of the RAF during the 1940s, as they fought to protect their country in the skies above during the Second World War. The propellers of their aircraft, visible beneath them, serve as a testament to their dedication and the technology that enabled them to carry out their daring missions.
