EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in 1902, we find ourselves in the courtyard of the fourth Rowton House located on Hammersmith Road in West London. Established by the philanthropist Lord Rowton, these six large, purpose-built hostels were designed to provide affordable lodging for working men in the early 20th century. The Rowton Houses, which were not for profit, were a significant improvement from the unsanitary and overcrowded doss-houses that were prevalent at the time. Each house could accommodate up to 1,000 men, offering them a clean and safe place to sleep for just sixpence a night. This image captures the outdoor space where the lodgers could relax and socialize. The scene is filled with a sense of community, as men sit on benches, chat with one another, and lean against the walls of the hostel. The simple pleasures of a cup of tea or a game of cards can be seen in the foreground, while the sun casts a warm glow over the courtyard. The Rowton Houses played a crucial role in the lives of many working men during this period. They provided a much-needed respite from the harsh realities of life, offering a sense of security and a temporary escape from the hardships of poverty and long working hours. This photograph offers a glimpse into a moment in time, capturing the spirit of camaraderie and the importance of affordable housing for the working class in early 20th century London.
