EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the picturesque town of Cambridge during the 1920s, showcases a collection of traditional items from the Folk Museum. The image begins with a Turf Becket and spade, tools used for harvesting and preparing turf for fuel in rural England. The Turf Becket was used to cut the sods, while the spade facilitated their lifting and transport. Moving clockwise, the next item is an intriguing eel trap. Eels were an essential food source for many rural communities, and this simple yet effective trap would have been used to catch them in nearby waterways. The eel gleve, a shallow channel or ditch, was used to guide eels towards the trap. Next, we find a pair of horse overshoes, designed to protect horses' hooves from the damaging effects of working on hard, stony ground. Horses were an integral part of rural life, used for farming, transportation, and various other tasks. Lastly, a sedge knife is depicted. This versatile tool, with its sharp, curved blade, was used for cutting and shaping sedge mats, which were essential for thatching roofs and insulating homes. The sedge knife, much like the other items in this photograph, represents the rich heritage of rural life and traditional husbandry practices that once thrived in the British countryside.
