This evocative photograph captures a moment of triumph and transformation during the brutal battles of the First World War. Taken on 27th March 1916 near the village of St Eloi, close to the historic city of Ypres in Belgium, the image shows members of the Northumberland Fusiliers proudly displaying captured German helmets and gas masks. The Northumberland Fusiliers were part of the British Expeditionary Force that had been fighting in the Ypres Salient since the beginning of the war. The day before this photograph was taken, the Northumberland Fusiliers had played a pivotal role in a successful attack against the German lines. Six mines had been exploded under German positions, causing significant damage and disruption. The resulting chaos provided an opportunity for the British troops to advance and seize enemy equipment, including the German helmets and gas masks seen in the photograph. The Northumberland Fusiliers' capture of German equipment was a symbol of the shifting tide of the war.
