In this stunning and intricately detailed illustration from John James Audubon's "Birds of America," we find the Wilson's Storm Petrel, Oceanites oceanicus, perched precariously on a rocky outcropping, its feet clinging tenaciously to the uneven surface. The petrel's rump is upturned, revealing the brilliant white underbelly, a stark contrast to the dark, glossy feathers covering the rest of its body. The petrel's wings are folded tightly against its sides, its beak open slightly as if in mid-call. The dramatic, action-packed scene is brought to life through the masterful use of color in this hand-coloured aquatint print. The deep blues and greens of the ocean waves crash against the rocks below, while the petrel's vibrant plumage stands out against the muted tones of the surrounding seascape.
