EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Osiride pillar of Pharaoh Sesostris I, also known as Senusret I or Jeperkara Senusret, from the Middle Kingdom's 12th Dynasty of ancient Egypt. Dated between 1956 and 1910 BC, this limestone sculpture is currently housed at the Luxor Museum in Egypt. Sesostris I is depicted in this Osirian form, paying homage to the ancient Egyptian god Osiris, symbolizing his divine connection and rule. The pharaoh is shown with a false beard, signifying his royal status and maturity, and his arms are crossed in front of his chest, holding the symbols of power and life: the ankh and the crux ansata, or key of life. The polychromy, or use of multiple colors, adds a striking and vibrant contrast to the pillar, enhancing the intricate details of the sculpture. The pharaoh's face displays a serene expression, showcasing the wisdom and strength of his reign during the Middle Egyptian Empire. The Nile River, the source of life and prosperity in ancient Egypt, is often depicted flowing at the base of the pillar, symbolizing the pharaoh's connection to the land and its people. The Osiride pillar of Pharaoh Sesostris I is a testament to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of ancient Egypt, providing a glimpse into the beliefs, values, and power of its rulers during the Middle Kingdom era.
