Patient in Bed 29 Quex Park VAD Hospital

Photograph of a patient (name unkown) in Bed 29 in C Ward at Quex Park VAD Hospital during the First World War. The man has suffered a severe wound to his right hand or arm, which is heavily bandaged and resting on a pillow. A table close by the bed has things he needs close at hand - including a Red Cross mug or cup, cigarettes and matches. Some clothing is piled on a chair; a towel is hanging over the bed head. A medical record sheet is hanging from the foot of the bed. Beside him can be seen one of the display cases in the room, which was (and still is) a gallery of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Behind the bed screens protect the glass of a floor to ceiling case, built to house a natural history diorama. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment. The Commandant was Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Date: circa 1916

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the moment of respite for a soldier named unknown in Bed 29 of C Ward at Quex Park VAD Hospital during the First World War. The man, his face a mask of pain and fatigue, cradles his heavily bandaged right hand or arm on a pillow. A table next to his bed holds essential items within reach - a Red Cross mug or cup, cigarettes, and matches. Clothing is piled on a chair, and a towel hangs over the bed head. A medical record sheet is attached to the foot of the bed, a testament to the care and attention he is receiving. The room's decor reflects the unique character of Quex Park VAD Hospital, which opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. Run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, the hospital was commanded by Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964), wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940) of Quex Park. The Powell-Cotton Museum, founded by Major Powell-Cotton, is represented in the room by one of its display cases, a gallery of natural history dioramas. Behind the bed screens, the glass of a floor-to-ceiling case is protected, revealing the wonders of the natural world that once brought solace and wonder to the wounded soldiers of the war. This photograph, taken circa 1916, offers a glimpse into the daily life of a soldier in recovery, the care he received, and the small comforts that made his time in the hospital bearable. It stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War and the resilience of those who endured.
