EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the British Army Equipment Exhibition held at Aldershot from 23-27 June 1980, two iconic light tanks of the Alvis Corporation take center stage. The Alvis FV101 Scimitar and FV107 Scorpion, both clad in their distinctive olive drab camouflage, are showcased against a backdrop of lush greenery and clear blue skies. The Alvis FV101 Scimitar, to the left, is a reconnaissance tank designed for rapid deployment and agility. Its sleek, low profile and compact design make it an effective scout vehicle, capable of navigating challenging terrain with ease. The Scimitar is armed with a 20mm L11A1 rifled cannon and a coaxial 7.62mm L37A2 machine gun, providing it with a formidable firepower. To the right, the Alvis FV107 Scorpion, a versatile tank destroyer, is displayed. Equipped with a powerful 105mm L7 gun, the Scorpion was designed to engage and destroy enemy armored vehicles from a distance. Its compact size and high mobility make it a valuable asset in various combat situations. The British Army Equipment Exhibition provided an opportunity for military personnel, industry experts, and the public to observe the latest advancements in military technology. The presence of these two light tanks, the Alvis FV101 Scimitar and FV107 Scorpion, showcased the British Army's commitment to innovation and technological superiority. The photograph also captures the spirit of the aviation industry, with a plane or helicopter visible in the background, emphasizing the interconnectedness of ground and air forces during military operations. The combination of these powerful light tanks and the flight capabilities of the aviation assets underscored the British Army's comprehensive approach to modern warfare.
