Junkers Ju 88 D-1 / Trop FE-1598
(ex Royal Romanian Air Force) - Junkers Ju 88 D-1/Trop FE-1598 (Werk Nr. 430650 / HK959 / Baksheesh ), in outdoor storage / display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. This is a long-range, photographic reconnaissance aircraft that was in the service of the Royal Romanian Air Force. On 22 July 1943, it was flown to Cyprus by a Romanian pilot who wanted to defect to the British forces on the island. Four Hurricanes from No. 127 Squadron escorted it to the airfield at Tobruk. Given the name Baksheesh, it was allocated the RAF serial number HK959 and test-flown in Egypt. However, by this point in the war, the RAF had already acquired three Ju-88s in flying condition and Baksheesh was handed over to the U.S. Army Air Forces, who flew it across the South Atlantic to Wright Field

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Junkers Ju 88 D-1/Trop FE-1598, an intriguing piece of aviation history currently on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Originally a long-range, photographic reconnaissance aircraft that served in the Royal Romanian Air Force, this Junkers Ju 88 D-1/Trop FE-1598 (Werk Nr. 430650 / HK959 / Baksheesh) holds a unique story. On July 22, 1943, a Romanian pilot, seeking to defect to the British forces on Cyprus, flew this aircraft to the island. Four Hurricanes from No. 127 Squadron escorted it to Tobruk airfield. After being allocated the RAF serial number HK959, it was test-flown in Egypt. However, by this stage in the war, the RAF had already acquired three Ju-88s in flying condition, so Baksheesh was handed over to the U.S. Army Air Forces. The U.S. Army Air Forces flew the Ju 88 across the South Atlantic to Wright Field for registration, examination, and testing in 1944 and 1946. It was later shipped to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona in January 1960. Despite its previous spurious Luftwaffe markings, the aircraft has been appropriately finished in its original style, with military insignia, and is now protected as an essential part of aviation history. This Junkers Ju 88 D-1/Trop FE-1598 stands as a testament to the intricacies of wartime aviation and the stories of those who played a role in it.
