Sandbanks Chain Ferry No. 1 - Entrance to Poole Harbour

The No.1 steam-powered Sandbanks chain ferry. Sandbanks Ferry is a vehicular chain ferry which crosses the entrance of Poole Harbour in the English county of Dorset. The route runs from Sandbanks to Studland and in doing so connects the coastal parts of the towns of Bournemouth and Poole with Swanage and the Isle of Purbeck. This avoids a 25-mile journey by road on a return trip. Introduced in 1926 to carry pedestrians and cars across the entrance to Poole Harbour, between Studland and Sandbanks. Built by J. Samuel White & Co Ltd on the Isle of Wight, this ferry, which could carry up to 15 cars (later 18), operated from 1926 to 1958. The No.1 ferry remained the primary vessel even after the No.2 ferry entered service in 1952. Both No.1 and No.2 ferries were withdrawn in 1958, with the introduction of the Diesel-Electric powered No.3 ferry. Date: circa 1940

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Sandbanks Chain Ferry No. 1, a historic steam-powered vessel that once connected the coastal towns of Bournemouth and Poole with Swanage and the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, England. Built by J. Samuel White & Co Ltd on the Isle of Wight in the 1920s, the No.1 ferry was introduced in 1926 and could carry up to 15 cars (later 18). It remained the primary ferry despite the arrival of No.2 in 1952. The ferry's route across the entrance of Poole Harbour avoided a lengthy 25-mile journey by road on a return trip. The No.1 ferry, which operated until 1958, was a vital means of transportation for locals and visitors alike, reducing travel time significantly. This photograph, estimated to be taken around 1940, captures the ferry in its prime, exuding an aura of elegance and charm. The steam-powered engine, the intricate chain mechanism, and the picturesque backdrop of the harbour entrance add to the allure of this bygone era. Both No.1 and No.2 ferries were eventually withdrawn in 1958, making way for the introduction of the diesel-electric powered No.3 ferry. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a simpler time when travel was an adventure and the Sandbanks Chain Ferry No.1 played a crucial role in connecting communities.
