United States Air Force North American T-6G Texan 50-1279, buzz-number TA-279, (msn 168-443), at the USAF Museum storage compound at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. In the background is a Convair B-36J Peacemaker 52-2220 and:- The sole Republic YF-84F Thunderstreak, 49-2430, originally ordered on F-84E contract as YF-96A, but redesignated YF-84F before completion as the prototype for the F-84F. Completed with swept wings and tail surfaces, and a 5200 lbst XJ35-A-25. 1950: Taken on strength by the USAF and first flown on 3 June 1950 at Edwards AFB, CA. Transferred to NACA High-Speed Flight Station, Edwards AFB, CA. For flight tests studying the aileron effectiveness of the aircraft before spoilers were incorporated. During these tests it was damaged during a landing at Edwards AFB, on 14 July 1950 1951:At the Wright Air Development Center, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. It was modified as a YF-84F parasite for the FICON (FIghter CONveyer) project. Modification included retractable hook in the nose weapons bay, anhedral tail plane, and hard points on the rear fuselage for connecting to the B-36 trapeze. 1953: First flight as FICON on 30 March 1953: Airborne launches and retrievals were subsequently performed t 5/53: Eglin AFB, FL. Aircraft briefly designated GRF-84F and flown to Edwards AFB, CA for tests to support the evaluation of the parasite jettison mechanism from 2 October 1953. 1954: With Air Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. from 12 May 1954: Last flight in FICON project on 9 June 1954 and Transferred to Wright Air Development Center, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. 1 July 1954 for testing of emergency landing barriers. Landing gear doors were removed and the aircraft did high-speed taxi into the barriers strung across the runway. Relegated to Class 32 status for the USAF Museum on 27 September 1954. To Williams AFB, AZ for use as a training aid on 18 November 1954: By 1967 at USAF Museum, Patterson Field, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. And towed to new facility in October 1970. Date: circa 1969

The YF-84F Thunderstreak was originally ordered on an F-84E contract as a YF-96A but was later redesignated as a prototype for the F-84F. It underwent various modifications for different projects over the years, including being used as a parasite aircraft for the FICON project.
After serving in multiple capacities and undergoing numerous tests and evaluations, this historic aircraft eventually found its way to the USAF Museum in Wright-Patterson AFB where it was preserved for future generations to admire.
