Born in the small town of Neuenhagen near Berlin, van der Faes is considered one of the most important German painters of the Baroque period. His mastery of chiaroscuro, or the contrast between light and dark, is evident in this self-portrait. Van der Faes' artistic training began in his hometown under the tutelage of local painters. However, it was in Italy that he honed his skills and was influenced by the works of Caravaggio and the Carracci brothers. Upon his return to Germany, he settled in Dresden, where he became a court painter for the Electors of Saxony. This self-portrait, with its intense gaze and dramatic lighting, is a testament to van der Faes' ability to capture the human spirit.
