EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 327 from The Gleanings of Natural History, vol. 3, published in 1764 by George Edwards, features an intricately detailed hand-colored copperplate etching of a Brasilian Saw-billed Roller (Anthracothorax brasilianus). This magnificent avian specimen is depicted perched outside, with its vibrant blue and green plumage contrasting against the brown background. The bird's distinctive bill, adorned with saw-like filaments, is prominently displayed in the foreground. Edwards, a renowned English naturalist and illustrator, meticulously annotated the plate with labels indicating various anatomical features. The bird's cap, or crown, is clearly visible at the back of its head. The detail of the feathers on the bird's body and wings is remarkable, with each filament carefully rendered. The bird's head is turned to the side, providing a clear view of its anatomy, including the feathers on the nape of its neck. The Brasilian Saw-billed Roller is a member of the roller family, known for their distinctive bill structure, which they use to hammer open the hard-shelled eggs of other birds. This illustration offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of this unique bird species during the 18th century. The hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the already impressive copperplate etching, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical natural history illustrations.
