EDITORS COMMENTS
In this exquisite 14th-century predella panel, renowned Sienese painter Pietro Lorenzetti captures a pivotal moment in the history of the Carmelite Order. The scene depicts Pope Honorius III (1216-1227) approving the Carmelite Rule in 1226. The Pope, dressed in his papal regalia, sits in a grand throne, his papal tiara on his head, and his right hand holds the Rule, which is being presented to him by Cencio Savelli, the Master General of the Order of Friars Minor. The Carmelites, a mendicant order founded in the late 12th century, were inspired by the biblical prophet Elijah and the desert dwelling hermits of Mount Carmel. They sought to live in solitude, prayer, and penance, imitating the contemplative life of the ancient prophets. The approval of their Rule by Pope Honorius III granted them official recognition and legitimacy within the Catholic Church. The panel is adorned with intricate details, reflecting the Gothic style of the period. The figures are depicted with a sense of realism, their faces expressing emotion and individuality. The use of light and shadow adds depth to the painting, creating a sense of three-dimensionality. This artwork, now housed in the Art Gallery of Siena, is a testament to the rich history of the Carmelite Order and the significant role it played in the development of the Catholic Church during the Middle Ages. The approval of the Carmelite Rule by Pope Honorius III marked the beginning of a new era for the Order, allowing them to spread their message of prayer, penance, and contemplation throughout Europe and beyond.
