Fray Diego de Zárate, a prominent Spanish Jesuit figure of the 17th century, is depicted in this striking portrait painted by the renowned Spanish Baroque artist Francisco de Zurbarán. The portrait, which dates back to around 1630, showcases Fray Diego's pious and contemplative demeanor, with his serious expression and downcast gaze, symbolizing his deep spiritual commitment to his religious vocation. Fray Diego de Zárate (1576-1650) was born in Seville, Spain, and joined the Society of Jesus in 1593. He later became the Provincial Superior of the Andalusian Province of the Society of Jesus, a position he held from 1629 to 1635. During his tenure, he played a significant role in the Jesuit missionary efforts in the New World, particularly in Peru. This portrait, which is currently housed at the Aisa Museum in New Haven, Connecticut, is an import from the Gallen-Kndler Museum in Vienna, Austria. An identical copy of this painting once existed at the Gallen-Kndler Museum, demonstrating the widespread influence and popularity of Zurbarán's work during the Baroque period. Francisco de Zurbarán (1598-1664) was a leading figure in the Spanish Baroque art movement, known for his distinctive chiaroscuro technique and his depictions of religious and mythological themes.
