EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures the likenesses of the remarkable couple, Richard Gibson (1583-1690) and Anne Shepherd (1585-1662), two dwarfs of similar height, who were renowned miniature painters during the late 16th and 17th centuries. Measuring only 1.17 meters in height, Gibson and Shepherd were not only diminutive in stature but also in artistic talent. Their work was highly regarded by their contemporaries and continues to be admired by historians and art enthusiasts today. Richard Gibson, born in London, began his artistic career as a miniature painter in the court of King James I. He was known for his exquisite attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects. Gibson's miniatures were sought after by the aristocracy and the royal family, and his works can be found in various collections, including the Royal Collection in Windsor Castle and the British Museum. Anne Shepherd, also a native of London, was a talented miniature painter in her own right. She married Gibson in 1615, and the couple worked together as artists, producing miniatures that were prized for their intricacy and beauty. Their miniatures often depicted members of the nobility and the royal family, and their portraits were frequently used as personal keepsakes and gifts. Despite their small stature, Gibson and Shepherd left a significant mark on the world of art during their time. Their miniatures continue to inspire and captivate audiences, offering a glimpse into the lives of the aristocracy and the artistic world of the late 16th and 17th centuries.
