In this evocative photograph taken at the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) Hatfield base in 1940, a group of intrepid women pilots stand proudly next to an Airspeed Oxford ferry aircraft. The pilots, Lettice Curtis, Jennie Broad, Audrey Sale-Barker, Gabrielle Patterson, and Commander Pauline Gower, were all members of the ATA, an organization established during World War II to transport aircraft between factories, maintenance facilities, and RAF airfields. The Airspeed Oxford, a twin-engine, single-piston, and multi-seat training aircraft, was a common sight at ATA bases during the war. The pilots are shown in their flying gear, ready for their next mission. Lettice Curtis, the youngest of the group, is seen on the far left, with her hands on her hips and a determined look in her eyes.
