This intriguing image showcases the Four-celled Kite, an early aviation design by American inventor Samuel Pierpont Langley. The Four-celled Kite, also known as Hargrave Slide 70, was a significant step forward in the development of heavier-than-air flight. Langley, a prominent scientist and astronomer, was determined to create a flying machine that could take off and land under its own power. The Four-celled Kite, named for its distinctive four-winged design, was a major departure from traditional kite designs. Its wings were arranged in a quadrilateral pattern, with each cell connected by lightweight struts. The kite was powered by a steam engine, which was housed in a small compartment located at the rear of the craft. A series of wires and pulleys were used to transmit engine power to the wings, allowing the kite to achieve controlled flight.
