EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Russian Musical Instruments," is an exquisite example of the rich cultural heritage of music in Russia, as depicted in "The Russian Antiquities" by M. Guthrie and illustrated through a meticulous copperplate engraving by John Lee for Abraham Rees' "Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature," published in London in 1820. The print showcases a diverse array of traditional Russian musical instruments, each with its unique character and history. At the center, the Goudok Rebec fiddle with its three strings stands out, its elongated neck and distinctive shape reflecting the instrument's origins in the Middle Ages. To the left, the Gelaika pipes, with their intricate design and multiple reeds, represent the ancient wind instruments used in various folk traditions. The double flutes, also ancient in origin, are depicted in the upper left corner, their slender, curved bodies and delicate finger holes evoking images of lively, melodic tunes. The hunting horn of Siberia, a traditional brass instrument, is depicted in the lower left corner, its long, curved shape and intricate engravings symbolizing the connection between music and the natural world. The Rojok (Rozhok) trumpet, with its conical shape and three valves, is shown in the upper right corner, representing the evolution of brass instruments in Russia. Lastly, the Batalaika (Balalaika) guitar with its two strings, a popular and iconic Russian instrument, is depicted in the lower right corner, its triangular body and simple design reflecting its versatility and widespread use in Russian folk music. This print not only serves as a beautiful visual representation of these instruments but also offers a glimpse into the history and cultural significance of music in Russia during the early 19th century.
