EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite statue of Saint Barbara, created around 1470 by the Master of the Statues of Koudewater, is a prime example of Netherlandish sculpture from the late medieval period. The sculptor, active between approximately 1460 and 1480, is known for his mastery of polychromy, the art of painting and decorating sculptures with pigments and other materials. This statue, made of walnut wood, is originally from the Monastery of Marienwater in Koudewater, Holland. Saint Barbara is depicted standing in an interior setting, dressed in the traditional attire of a noblewoman. She is shown holding a palm branch and a tower, symbols of her martyrdom. The face of the statue is expressive and serene, with delicate features and a gentle smile. The figure is graceful and slender, with intricate details in the folds of her clothing. The statue's polychromy adds depth and dimension to the figure, bringing it to life. The vibrant colors and intricate details of the decoration enhance the beauty and significance of the sculpture. The use of polychromy was a common practice in medieval art, reflecting the belief that color was an essential aspect of the divine. Saint Barbara was a popular saint in the Middle Ages, particularly among women, due to her association with protection against lightning strikes and her status as a virgin martyr. This statue would have been a cherished object in the monastery, serving as a reminder of her story and her intercession. Today, it is a valuable and beautiful work of art, preserving the legacy of the Master of the Statues of Koudewater and the rich artistic traditions of the Netherlands in the late medieval period.
