EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the second unit of the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service, as they prepared to embark on their journey from Cardiff, Wales in April 1915. The women, dressed in their medical uniforms, are shown here prior to their departure on the S.S. Ceramic. Their destination: Malta, where they would provide much-needed medical assistance at hospitals in Valetta and Bighi. Among the group is Dr. Elsie Inglis, the founder of the Scottish Women's Hospitals, who is seen just below the large left-hand column. The unit's Chief Medical Officer at Valjevo Camp, Dr. Alice Hutchison, described the send-off from the Cardiff Docks with great enthusiasm, as the women responded with determination to the question, "Are we downhearted?" with a resounding "No, no, no!" After a brief stop in Malta, the unit continued on to Serbia, where they were based at Valjevo. The Scottish Women's Hospitals played a crucial role in providing medical care to soldiers and civilians during the First World War, and this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of their courage and dedication. The women's commitment to serving those in need, despite the challenges and hardships they faced, continues to inspire us today.
