EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment as the firm of F.H. Buckingham begins the sinking of an artesian well at Aylsham Union Workhouse in 1923. The workhouse, designed by William J. Donthorn and erected in 1848-9, stands proudly in the background. Once a symbol of the harsh living conditions for the poor during the Victorian era, the workhouse later transformed into St. Michael's Hospital. The men in the photograph, dressed in work clothes and focused on their task, are drilling the ground to reach the artesian water supply. The drill bit bore deep into the earth, and the laborious process of sinking the well was essential for providing clean water to the hospital. The 1840s workhouse conditions were notoriously poor, with residents often suffering from inadequate healthcare and living in cramped, unsanitary environments. The 1920s marked a significant improvement in the workhouse's infrastructure, with the addition of modern amenities like an artesian well to ensure better living and working conditions for the residents. The historical significance of this photograph lies in the intersection of engineering innovation, social reform, and the transformation of the workhouse into a hospital. The image serves as a reminder of the progress made in public health and welfare over the years, and the vital role that engineering and labor played in shaping the landscape of Aylsham, Norfolk.
