EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment when Sir Robert Baden-Powell, KCB, KCVO, LLD, FRGS, the visionary founder of the Scout Association, opened the South London Scout Exhibition on the chilly December day of 13th, 1911. Dressed in his iconic Scout uniform, complete with his distinctive peaked hat, gloves, and jutting Scout stick, Sir Robert exudes a sense of authority and enthusiasm. His medals and badges, proudly displayed on his chest, attest to his military background and numerous accomplishments. Sir Robert Baden-Powell, a former British Army officer, had founded the Scout Movement just two years prior, in 1907, with the publication of his book "Scouting for Boys." The movement quickly gained popularity, and the first Scout camp was held in 1907 in Brownsea Island. The South London Scout Exhibition, held at the Crystal Palace, was an opportunity for the public to learn about the Scout Association and its mission to promote character development, citizenship, and outdoor skills in young people. The Scout Movement, which would later become the World Organization of the Scout Movement, has since grown into a global phenomenon, with millions of members in over 220 countries. This photograph serves as a testament to Sir Robert Baden-Powell's enduring legacy and the impact he had on the lives of countless young people around the world.
