EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the brutal reality of the force feeding of suffragettes during the early 20th century. In the photograph, a doctor, armed with a large syringe labeled "Milk," attempts to force-feed a determined suffragette in her prison cell. The woman, dressed in the iconic suffragette colors of purple, white, and green, struggles against the prison warder who holds her down. Her strength and resolve are evident as she manages to pull out large quantities of the doctor's hair in retaliation. The use of a milk syringe as a tool of oppression is a chilling reminder of the inhumane treatment endured by these women in their fight for the right to vote. The suffragettes, who were primarily women, waged a peaceful campaign for women's suffrage in the United Kingdom, but when their protests became too disruptive for the authorities, they were subjected to forcible feeding. This cruel practice involved forcing large quantities of food into the women's mouths and noses to break their hunger strikes. This photograph is one of several known to exist that depict forcible feeding as a joke, further highlighting the callous disregard for the suffering of these women. The date of this image is estimated to be circa 1911, a time when the suffragette movement was at its peak. The struggle for women's suffrage eventually paid off, and the Representation of the People Act was passed in 1918, granting some women the right to vote. However, this image serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices and hardships endured by the suffragettes in their quest for equality.
