This evocative image captures the essence of Pecke's dual identity as a lawyer and a versifier. Pecke's legal career is shrouded in mystery, with few records surviving from the period. However, we do know that he was admitted to the Middle Temple, one of the Inns of Court in London, in 1660. This prestigious institution was a breeding ground for future lawyers, politicians, and intellectuals. The portrait shows Pecke in the traditional attire of a lawyer of the time, wearing a wig and a long, flowing gown. The wig, which was mandatory for legal proceedings, signified the wearer's status as a professional lawyer. The gown, with its velvet collar and tassels, denoted Pecke's membership in the Middle Temple. However, Pecke's true passion lay in poetry. He was a prolific versifier, penning poems on various themes, from love and nature to politics and religion.
