This striking photograph captures Pierre Marie René Waldeck-Rousseau, a prominent French statesman, in 1902, the year he played a pivotal role in the Dreyfus Affair's resolution. Waldeck-Rousseau, born in 1846, served as Prime Minister of France from 1898 to 1902. His tenure was marked by his efforts to restore order and stability following the turmoil of the Dreyfus Affair, a highly publicized and divisive antisemitic scandal. Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish army captain, had been wrongfully convicted of treason in 1894. Waldeck-Rousseau, who initially supported Dreyfus's conviction, later came to believe in his innocence. In 1901, he ordered a retrial, which resulted in Dreyfus's acquittal in 1906. Waldeck-Rousseau's decision to reverse his earlier stance and champion Dreyfus's cause demonstrated his courage and commitment to justice.
