EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of urgency and patriotic fervor that filled the air during the early days of World War I. The scene is set at York Railway Station in 1914, where a large noticeboard displays a series of recruitment posters calling on men of the North to enlist in the armed forces. The message at the top of the board urges men to avenge the East Coast bombardments suffered by the Yorkshire towns of Whitby, Scarborough, and Hartlepool. The posters flanking the message feature powerful imagery, including soldiers charging into battle and a mother imploring her son to join up. At the bottom of the noticeboard, the famous "Think" poster designed by the renowned silhouette artist, Harry Lawrence Oakley, can be seen. This iconic poster, which features a simple yet effective silhouette of a soldier's helmet against a red background, became an iconic symbol of the war effort and was used extensively in recruitment campaigns. The use of posters as a means of persuasion and propaganda during wartime was a common tactic, and this photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the emotions and motivations that drove men to enlist in the armed forces during the early days of the First World War.
