EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking World War II poster, titled "ATS Eyes of the Guns," was published by the HMSO (His Majesty's Stationery Office) in 1940, during the early stages of the war. Designed by renowned British artist Beverley Pick, the color photolithograph was part of a larger recruitment campaign for the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), which aimed to encourage women to join the military effort and support the war effort from the home front. The image depicts a group of determined and focused women, each intently engaged in various tasks related to anti-aircraft defense. One woman points to the sky, likely locating an incoming enemy aircraft, while another measures the angle of its approach. A third woman operates a gun, her eyes fixed on the target. The women's uniforms and equipment reflect their commitment and preparedness for their roles in the defense of their country. The poster's title, "ATS Eyes of the Guns," emphasizes the importance of these women in the war effort, as their vigilance and quick thinking were crucial in detecting and responding to air raids. The poster's bold design and powerful message effectively conveyed the sense of urgency and the critical role women played in the war effort during this pivotal period in history. The ATS was the female branch of the British Army, and its members performed a variety of roles, including clerical, mechanical, and medical duties, as well as driving vehicles and operating anti-aircraft guns. By the end of the war, over 150,000 women had served in the ATS, making it one of the largest women's organizations in the British military. This iconic poster serves as a testament to their courage and contributions during the war years.
