EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this photograph of York's famous Shambles, taken circa 1909. The Shambles, located in the heart of York, England, is one of the most historic and picturesque streets in the country. Known for its unique, overhanging timber-framed buildings, this quaint street dates back to the 14th century. In this image, we see the Shambles as it appeared over a century ago. The narrow, cobblestone street is lined with shops and houses, many of which seem to lean precariously over the street. The shops display a variety of goods, from meat and poultry to baked goods and household items. The atmosphere is bustling and lively, with people going about their daily business and children playing in the street. The Shambles was once known as the "Great Flesh Shambles" due to the butchers who sold their meat here. However, by the early 20th century, many of the shops had diversified and sold a wider range of goods. Despite this, the street retained its unique character and charm, which has endured to this day. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, allowing us to imagine what life was like in York over a hundred years ago. The Shambles remains a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world who come to experience its rich history and unique atmosphere.
