Jane Russell 1949 Film star in London Voluptuous sex symbol
Jane Russell 1949
Film star in London
Voluptuous sex symbol and star of Hollywood films, TV and nightclubs. Russell was the daughter of an actress. She worked as a receptionist and model, and studied theater at Max Reinhardts Theatrical workshop and with Maria Ouspenskaya. Endowed with a large bust she won the lead role in Howard Hughes " The Outlaw" (1941) after Hughes conducted a nationwide search for a busty actress. The film caused a storm of controversy due primarily to the amount of cleavage shown by Russell on screen and after brief releases in 1941 and 1943 it was not officially released until 1950. The controversy brought Russell much publicity, often in the form of off-colour, sophomoric jokes. However, she surpassed her mindless bimbo image and went on to perform with versatality in a number of films during the subsequent three decades, including comedies with Bob Hope and musicals with Marylin Monroe. She often played cynical " tough broads". She starred in the Broadway musical " Company" in 1971. TV viewers will remember her for a series of bra commercials in the seventies.

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we see the stunning Jane Russell, a film star who made waves in London during her visit in September 1949. Known for her undeniable beauty and voluptuous figure, Russell was not only a sex symbol but also an accomplished actress who left an indelible mark on Hollywood. Born to an actress mother, Russell's path to stardom began as she worked as a receptionist and model before honing her craft at Max Reinhardts Theatrical workshop and under the guidance of Maria Ouspenskaya. However, it was her role in Howard Hughes' controversial film "The Outlaw" that catapulted her into the limelight. With its daring display of cleavage, the movie caused quite a stir upon its release in 1950 after facing multiple delays due to censorship concerns. Despite initial public perception focusing on her physical attributes rather than talent, Jane Russell proved herself time and again with versatile performances throughout three decades. From comedies alongside Bob Hope to memorable musicals with Marilyn Monroe, she showcased remarkable range beyond being labeled as just another mindless bimbo. Notably, Russell also graced Broadway stages with her presence when she starred in the acclaimed musical "Company" in 1971. Moreover, television viewers will fondly remember her from a series of bra commercials during the seventies—a testament to both her enduring appeal and business acumen. This timeless image captures Jane Russell at the height of her fame—confidently embodying sensuality while defying expectations through sheer talent and versatility.
