EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from Memory Lane Prints, we are transported back to the St Lawrence Fair on 6th August 1953. The image captures three strangely dressed gentlemen who have arrived at her father's pub in Ashburton. As part of the three-day fair, it is their duty to ensure that the beer served in all the town's pubs meets a high standard. On the left stands Portreeve Robert Garner, representing tradition and authority. In the center is Charles Paul, Lord of the Manor, exuding an air of importance and prestige. Completing this trio is Richard Ascolt, Town Bailiff, with a stern expression suggesting his commitment to upholding local customs. However, amidst these serious figures stands little Hedi Westman. Determined not to be left out of this age-old ritual, she holds a pint glass filled with lemonade instead of ale – her own version of participation in this historic event. The photograph beautifully captures both tradition and innocence as Hedi sips her lemonade through a straw while surrounded by men donning medieval attire and tankards full of ale. Their hats add an element of whimsy to an otherwise formal scene. This image serves as a reminder that even during times steeped in custom and formality like the 1950s, there was still room for joyous moments where children could find their place within age-old traditions.
