The head of the Jarrow Crusade seen here during the first stage of their journey to

The head of the Jarrow Crusade seen here during the first stage of their journey to London. The Jarrow March was a protest march in England in October 1936 against the unemployment and poverty suffered in the northeast Tyneside town of Jarrow following the closure of Palmers Shipyard the towns main employer and the failure of the proposed steelworks to materialise.
Around 200 men marched from Jarrow to London over 26 days, carrying a petition to the British government requesting the re-establishment of industry in the town. The petition was received by the House of Commons but not debated, and the march produced few immediate results. The Jarrovians went home believing that they had failed. 5th October 1936

The Head of the Jarrow Crusade - A Symbol of Resilience and Hope

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this poignant photo print, we witness a defining moment during the first stage of the historic Jarrow Crusade's journey to London. It captures the spirit and determination of around 200 men who embarked on a courageous protest march against unemployment and poverty in their beloved town of Jarrow. The year was 1936, amidst the harsh realities of austerity and economic depression. The closure of Palmers Shipyard, once a thriving source of employment, had left Jarrow devastated. As if that wasn't enough, hopes for a new steelworks were shattered as well. Undeterred by despair, these brave Jarrovians set out on an arduous 26-day trek carrying with them a petition pleading for industry to be revived in their community. Their destination? The heart of British governance - London. Although their efforts resulted in few immediate changes or debates within the House of Commons upon delivering their petition, it is important to remember that true change often takes time. These men returned home feeling disheartened but unbowed; they believed they had failed. However, history has proven otherwise. The Jarrow Crusade stands as an enduring symbol not only for labor issues but also for resilience and unity in times of adversity. This remarkable photograph serves as a reminder that even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges, ordinary individuals can rise above circumstances to fight for justice and inspire future generations.
