EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the determination and spirit of Paul Breed, a Coventry-based New Zealand athlete. In his quest to qualify for the 1990 Commonwealth Games held in his home country of New Zealand, Paul participated in a specially arranged race at the Kirby Corner Road Athletics Track on September 12th, 1989. Unfortunately, due to an obscured view from third place, we are unable to see Paul's face directly. The image also features David Moorcroft, who provided invaluable assistance during the first 600 meters of the race. Despite their combined efforts, Paul fell agonizingly short of achieving the qualifying time by just four tenths of a second. However, this setback did not deter him as he resolved to make another attempt at Crystal Palace next week. The photograph exudes energy and action with its depiction of these middle-distance runners pushing themselves to their limits. It serves as a testament to the dedication and commitment required in pursuing athletic excellence. As part of Memory Lane Prints' collection from Coventry Telegraph Archive, this snapshot is not only a visual delight but also an important historical artifact capturing an intense moment in sports history during the vibrant era of the 1980s.
