At midnight on 13th August the police and units of the East German army began to close the border and, by Sunday morning, 13 August, the border with West Berlin was closed.
Picture taken three days afterwards shows: East German border police and guards at the Brandenburg Gate during a visit to the landmark by West Berlin mayor Willy Brandt and American Army Generals.
