Terukuni Maru was a Japanese ocean liner owned by Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK). The ship was launched in 1929 by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. at Nagasaki, on the southern island of Kyūshū, Japan, entering service in 1930. She sank off the English coast in 1939 after striking a mine. Her sinking has been described as Japans only World War II casualty outside East Asia before the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbour. The 27 passengers and 178 crew were all saved.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Terukuni Maru: A Glimpse into Japan's Maritime History". This print showcases the majestic Terukuni Maru, a 12,000-ton ocean liner that sailed the seas in the early 20th century. Owned by Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), this Japanese vessel was launched in 1929 and commenced its service in 1930 after being built by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. However, tragedy struck on that fateful day of November 21st, 1939. While navigating off the English coast, Terukuni Maru fell victim to a devastating mine explosion. This unfortunate incident marked Japan's sole World War II casualty outside East Asia before the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Miraculously though, all of her passengers and crew - consisting of twenty-seven passengers and one hundred seventy-eight crew members - were rescued from perilous waters. This evocative image transports us back to an era defined by global conflict as it captures both the grandeur of this ocean liner and its untimely demise during World War II. As we gaze upon this historical artifact from Memory Lane Prints, let us remember those who served aboard Terukuni Maru with gratitude for their bravery amidst turbulent times at sea.
