EDITORS COMMENTS
Operating from a landing strip carved by RAF airmen and Yugoslav Partisans, this print captures the heroic efforts of Coastal Air Force in providing crucial air support to Marshal Tito's campaign against formidable enemy forces. Nestled among the rocky hills of a Dalmatian island, Spitfires and Hurricanes soar through the sky, their thunderous engines echoing determination. Dubbed as 'Island Commandos, ' these fearless pilots have reported remarkable victories - enemy trains obliterated, schooners sent to the depths, ferries engulfed in flames, and strategic targets like petrol dumps and gun positions decimated. Their success is owed not only to their unwavering courage but also to the tireless dedication of RAF ground crews and the steadfast support of Yugoslav Partisans who keep them airborne amidst adversity. At just 21 years old, Squadron Leader A. LeHardy from Faversham, Kent commands this extraordinary unit with exceptional leadership skills beyond his years. In this poignant image captured in August 1944 by an official photographer from Memory Lane Prints, we witness RAF Airmen seated alongside Yugoslav partisans on the mainplane of a Spitfire. Among them are Warrant Officer T. V. Pigot hailing from Northwich, Cheshire; Flight Sergeant E. Ray representing Melbourns, Australia; Leading Aircraftman L. Ash proudly showcasing West Dulwich roots in London; and Leading Aircraftman J. Garnell standing tall for Denton Manchester. This print immortalizes their indomitable spirit and serves as a testament to their unwavering commitment towards freedom during one of history's most challenging times.
