EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Bournemouth Belle, a luxurious all-Pullman train that epitomized the golden age of rail travel. Produced in 1933 by the Southern Railway (SR), this poster was designed to entice passengers to embark on an unforgettable journey between Waterloo Station in London and the picturesque coastal town of Bournemouth. The Bournemouth Belle, with its exquisite Art Deco design, exuded elegance and sophistication. Departing daily from Waterloo at precisely 10:30 am, it whisked travelers away on a remarkable adventure through scenic landscapes and charming towns. Its return trip arrived back at Waterloo Station at 7:17 pm during its inaugural season. Originally consisting of ten Pullman cars, this magnificent train offered unparalleled comfort and luxury to its discerning passengers. However, as demand fluctuated over the years, the number of cars varied accordingly. The Bournemouth Belle operated until September 9th, 1939 when it was temporarily withdrawn due to wartime circumstances. It reemerged after World War II in 1946. The artwork for this poster was skillfully crafted by H Molenaar and beautifully captures the allure and grandeur of this prestigious train service. Preserved within the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print serves as a timeless reminder of an era when rail travel represented not only transportation but also an extraordinary experience filled with style and glamour.
