Skegness is so Bracing, LNER poster, 1933

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote rail travel to the Lincolnshire coastal resort town of Skegness. The poster shows a child pulling the Jolly Fisherman by his red scarf. The Jolly Fisherman poster is one of the most famous English holiday posters. It was first published in 1908 by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) which paid twelve pounds for it. Since then the Jolly Fisherman has been caricatured and re-drawn over and over again. It was an outstanding poster for its time, because most Victorian and Edwardian posters were restrained and factual. Artwork by Frank Newbould (1887-1951) after John Hassall (1868-1948), who first drew the character

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1933, when the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) sought to entice travelers to the charming coastal town of Skegness. The poster, created by talented artist Frank Newbould after John Hassall's original character design, features a delightful scene that has become iconic in English holiday history. In this vibrant artwork, we see a child playfully tugging at the Jolly Fisherman's red scarf as they stroll along the sandy beach. The Jolly Fisherman himself is a beloved figure who first graced posters in 1908 and quickly became synonymous with Skegness. His jovial demeanor and welcoming presence have made him an enduring symbol of fun-filled seaside vacations. What makes this particular poster so remarkable is its departure from the restrained and factual style commonly seen during Victorian and Edwardian times. Instead, it bursts with life and energy, capturing the essence of what awaits visitors in Skegness. Over the years, countless artists have tried their hand at reimagining this famous character, but none can match Hassall's original creation. This cherished piece of art continues to evoke nostalgia for simpler times when families flocked to Skegness for bracing sea air and unforgettable adventures. Thanks to National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, we can now admire this timeless image once again and let our imagination wander back to those golden days of rail travel and seaside bliss.
