1863-1867 Changed view of human antiquity

The " Appearnace of Man" from Louis Figuiers Earth Before the Deluge 1863 (above), and below from the same book in its sixth edition of 1867. Engravings by Riou. In 1863, a distinctly Eden-like scene sees a couple gaze out over a benign creation of contemporary animals. In the lower 1867 view the author was forced by recent developments in mainstream geology to promulgate a cave-dwelling tribal view of the first humans. They are surrounded by beasts both living and extinct. This change of emphasis was a result of the recent work of Boucher de Perthes, Falconer, Prestwich and Evans in establishing the case for human antiquity and coexistence with extinct megafauna. Sir Charles Lyells acceptance of this thesis probably caused Figuiers choice of the later representation. The handaxes are wrongly shown hafted (after Boucher de Perthes). See J.S. Rudwick " Scenes from Deep Time" 1992

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the evolving perception of human antiquity during the years 1863-1867. The image above, taken from Louis Figuiers' renowned book "Earth Before the Deluge" in 1863, depicts a scene reminiscent of Eden. A couple gazes out over a tranquil landscape teeming with contemporary animals, evoking a sense of harmony and innocence. However, in the lower view from the same book's sixth edition published in 1867, we witness a significant shift in perspective. Recent developments in mainstream geology compelled Figuiers to present a new narrative: that of cave-dwelling tribes as the first humans. This revised representation portrays them surrounded by both living and extinct beasts, symbolizing their coexistence with megafauna long gone. The catalyst for this change was the groundbreaking work of Boucher de Perthes, Falconer, Prestwich, and Evans. Through their research on human antiquity and evidence supporting cohabitation with extinct creatures like mammoths and woolly rhinos, they challenged conventional beliefs. Sir Charles Lyell's acceptance of this thesis likely influenced Figuiers' decision to adopt this later depiction. Notably though, some inaccuracies are evident - such as wrongly showing handaxes hafted - reflecting ongoing scientific discoveries at that time. Paul D. Stewart's masterful monochrome artwork brings these contrasting views to life while capturing the essence of prehistoric times. This thought-provoking print serves as a visual reminder of humanity's ever-evolving understanding of our ancient origins and our intricate relationship with Earth's past inhabitants.
