1888 Giant amphibian of triassic coast

Landscape of the Triassic, Vivid colour lithograph for " Dr. Schuberts Naturgeschichte - Geologie, Mineralreich, Palaontologie". Published 1888 in Stuttgart 1888 by J.F. Shreiber. The palaeontology section by Dr. Friedrich Rolle. The engraving shows Mastodonsaurus (a temnospondyl amphibian) with a phytosaur Belodon in the background. At the time this was engraved Mastodonsaurus was held responsible for the large trace fossil footprints found in Triassic sandstones and described as Chirotherium, but recent research indicates the tracks belong to reptiles of the Pseudosuchia. German lithographers dominated colour lithography with their high volume productions such as this book for Children
