Double-slit experiment, artwork C016 / 9863

Double-slit experiment Computer artwork showing a plane wave (top left) passing through a screen with two gaps. The gaps act as new wave sources and the wavefronts bend to create two sets of circular waves radiating outwards. These two new waves create an interference pattern as they interact. At the point where a wave peak from one hits a wave peak from another, or a trough hits a trough, they reinforce each other; their magnitudes are summed. This is known as constructive interference. Where a trough hits a peak or vice versa and they cancel each other out. This is known as destructive interference

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, titled "Double-slit experiment" offers a visual representation of the intriguing phenomenon known as interference. Created by Russell Kightley for Science Photo Library, this computer-generated print showcases a plane wave gracefully passing through a screen featuring two gaps. As the wave encounters these openings, they transform into new sources of waves, causing the original wavefronts to bend and form two sets of circular ripples that radiate outward. The interaction between these newly created waves gives rise to an intricate pattern known as an interference pattern. When peaks align with peaks or troughs coincide with troughs, they reinforce each other in what is called constructive interference. This reinforcement results in heightened magnitudes where the individual waves' strengths are summed. Conversely, when a peak intersects with a trough or vice versa, they cancel each other out through destructive interference. This cancellation leads to areas void of any significant displacement. Through this mesmerizing illustration, we gain insight into the fundamental concepts underlying quantum mechanics and wave-particle duality. The parallel slits act as barriers that allow us to observe how particles can exhibit both particle-like and wave-like properties simultaneously. Russell Kightley's artwork beautifully captures the essence of this renowned experiment while highlighting its significance in understanding the behavior of physical phenomena such as diffraction and interference patterns within physics.
