Portrait of Charles Darwin, British naturalist
Charles Darwin. Portrait of Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882), British naturalist. Darwin studied medicine and theology, but was most interested in natural history. In 1831, he joined the HMS Beagle as a naturalist on its five year voyage around the world. This provided the data for his book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859). He proposed that natural variation in a species creates many individual traits, some more useful than others. Evolution results from only those offspring with the most competitive traits surviving. His ideas were opposed by the Church, but have now been largely accepted. Taken from the 1878 volume of Men of Mark and Distinction

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed British naturalist, Charles Darwin. Known for his groundbreaking work in evolutionary biology, Darwin's portrait exudes intelligence and curiosity. Born in 1809, he initially pursued medicine and theology but found his true passion in natural history. In 1831, Darwin embarked on a momentous journey aboard the HMS Beagle as its resident naturalist. Over five years of exploration around the world, he meticulously collected data that would later form the foundation of his revolutionary book, "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection" published in 1859. Darwin's theory proposed that within a species, variations occur naturally among individuals. Some traits prove more advantageous than others for survival and reproduction. Through this process of natural selection, only those offspring with the most competitive traits endure over time – leading to evolution. Unsurprisingly, Darwin faced opposition from religious institutions due to conflicts between his ideas and prevailing beliefs at the time. However, today his theories have gained widespread acceptance within scientific communities worldwide. This remarkable portrait captures not only Charles Darwin's appearance but also symbolizes his immense contributions to our understanding of life on Earth. It serves as a reminder that even amidst controversy and resistance, great minds can shape our perception of nature itself.
