Fine Art Print : Magnetic repulsion
Fine Art Prints from Science Photo Library
Magnetic repulsion
Magnetic repulsion. The iron filings sprinkled between these two bar magnets reveal the shape of the repulsive magnetic field between them. The filings show the repulsion as field lines arcing away from the ends of the magnets. Bar magnets have a north and a south pole. Unlike poles attract each other, whereas like poles repel each other. The poles here are both marked north (N). The magnetised filings align in thin arcing lines due to the interactions between them, even though the magnetic field itself is continuous. For the field shape between attracting magnets, see image C010/6375

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the phenomenon of magnetic repulsion in all its mesmerizing glory. The image showcases two bar magnets with iron filings sprinkled between them, revealing the shape of the repulsive magnetic field that exists between these powerful objects. As we observe the photograph closely, we can see how the iron filings align themselves in thin arcing lines, showcasing the interactions and forces at play within this magnetic field. Despite their individuality, these filings come together to form a cohesive pattern that beautifully illustrates the concept of repulsion. The bar magnets featured in this image both bear markings for their north poles (N), indicating that they possess like charges. In accordance with one of nature's fundamental forces, like poles repel each other while unlike poles attract. This principle is clearly demonstrated here as we witness the forceful pushback between these two magnets. Through this striking visual representation, we gain insight into an essential aspect of magnetism – how it influences and shapes our physical world. It serves as a reminder of just how intricate and fascinating our universe truly is. This print from Science Photo Library not only captures a scientific experiment but also serves as a testament to human curiosity and exploration into understanding natural phenomena such as magnetism.
