Molecular orbitals
Molecular orbitals. Computer model of a mixture of molecular orbitals. The electrons in molecules can be arranged in different patterns, giving rise to different energies. These patterns, or molecular orbitals, can co-exist within the rules of quantum mechanics. This leads to the concept of mixing the molecular orbitals to model the overall behaviour of the molecule. This mixing is seen here as the overlapping mix of colours and lines of potential energy surface. This pattern is an example of caustics, the patterns arising when overlap is observed. This model was created as an artwork by Professor Eric Heller

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of molecular orbitals, offering a glimpse into the fascinating realm of quantum mechanics. Created by Professor Eric Heller as an artwork, this computer model beautifully illustrates the concept of mixing molecular orbitals to understand the overall behavior of molecules. The vibrant colors and intersecting lines represent potential energy surfaces, resulting from the overlapping mix of different patterns. These patterns, known as caustics, emerge when overlap is observed in molecular orbitals. Through this artistic representation, we can visualize how electrons arrange themselves in various arrangements within molecules and how these arrangements give rise to different energies. As we delve into this abstract composition, it becomes evident that art and science intertwine seamlessly. The fusion of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and optics is apparent in every stroke and hue. This simulation not only captures the essence of atomic structure but also serves as a testament to human creativity in unraveling complex scientific phenomena. Beyond its aesthetic appeal lies a profound exploration into the fundamental building blocks of matter. It reminds us that even at microscopic scales, beauty exists – both visually and intellectually. This thought-provoking piece invites us to contemplate the wonders hidden within our universe while celebrating the ingenuity behind its discovery.
