Mstislav Keldysh (1911-1978), Russian mathematician and physicist. Keldysh spent the inter-war years working on better aerodynamical models for aircraft, producing important advances in the knowledge of compressible air flows. After the Second World War he became involved in rockets and space flight, playing a leading role in the development of the first Soviet missile and in the planning of space travel. In recognition of his achievements he was made president of the USSR Academy of Sciences
