Biot Jean Baptiste, French physicist

Jean Baptiste Biot (1774-1862), French physicist. Biots most famous work concerned optical activity. He showed for the first time that different types of quartz rotate the plane of polarised light in different directions, later extending this to many other substances. He demonstrated that the amount of rotation is proportional to the path length of light through the medium and to the mediums concentration. In 1804 with Gay-Lussac he made an early balloon ascent and made meteorological and magnetic observations up to 5000 metres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Jean Baptiste Biot, a pioneering French physicist whose contributions to the field of optics and magnetism are truly extraordinary. Born in 1774 and passing away in 1862, Biot's legacy is immortalized through his groundbreaking work on optical activity. Biot's most significant achievement was unveiling that various types of quartz possess the ability to rotate polarised light in distinct directions. Expanding this discovery to numerous other substances, he established that the degree of rotation corresponds directly to both the path length of light within the medium and its concentration. This fundamental principle revolutionized our understanding of polarisation and paved the way for further advancements in physics. Beyond his profound impact on optics, Biot also ventured into uncharted territories as an early balloonist. In collaboration with Gay-Lussac, he embarked on a daring balloon ascent in 1804, conducting meteorological and magnetic observations at altitudes reaching up to an impressive 5000 meters. This mesmerizing artwork not only pays homage to Biot's scientific prowess but also serves as a testament to his unwavering curiosity and relentless pursuit of knowledge. It encapsulates his multifaceted persona as a researcher, physicist, historian, and magnetism enthusiast. With its vibrant colors and intricate details carefully captured by Science Photo Library, this print allows us to delve into history while celebrating one man's indelible mark on science.
