Samurai crab

Samurai crab (Heikea japonica). This crab is native to Japan, where it is known as the Samurai crab or Heikegani, and lives at a depth of 30 to 100 metres. It is one of a number of species of human-faced crabs that play a part in Japanese and Chinese folklore. The upper shell (carapace) is thought to resemble a grimacing human face. Fishermen usually return human-faced crabs to the sea because they think they are a reincarnation of drowned warriors. The carapace of this specimen measures 3cm wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic beauty of the Samurai crab, also known as Heikea japonica. Originating from Japan, this unique crustacean resides in the depths of 30 to 100 meters beneath the ocean's surface. Its distinguishing feature is its upper shell, which remarkably resembles a grimacing human face. This uncanny resemblance has led to fascinating folklore beliefs in both Japanese and Chinese cultures. Legend has it that fishermen often encounter these human-faced crabs during their expeditions at sea. In accordance with ancient traditions, they believe that these creatures are reincarnations of fallen warriors who met their demise by drowning. Out of respect for these perceived spirits, fishermen typically release them back into the ocean. Measuring at just 3cm wide, this particular specimen's carapace is meticulously captured against a striking black background in this photograph print. The intricate details of its anatomy - from its legs to its pincers - highlight the remarkable diversity found within marine biology. With its intriguing appearance and cultural significance, this image serves as a testament to nature's ability to inspire awe and wonderment among those who appreciate the wonders hidden beneath our oceans' depths.
